Voting blindly is not a prescription for effective
government. A well-informed vote, however, can help ensure a thriving
democracy. And voters concerned about the quality of government should take the
time to learn about candidates and issues before casting a ballot.
One has to do thorough researches on the candidates, have in
mind this will be time consuming. It is a worthwhile course, though. Check their
track records, personality and their stances on issues that are vital to you,
your family and society around you. Every politician seeking an elective post
has a track record either as a politician prior this elections or a leader in
an organization, institution, company etc. However, politicians are human
beings and to err is human. None of them will be 100% perfect, so it wise not
to limit the bar at 100%. You might end up not getting a suitable candidate. Compare
and contrast to have a better bargain.
It is highly encouraged to follow the news on established
and trusted media houses. Read the nationwide newspapers, listen to radio and
watch TV. This will expose you to the up-to-date proceedings of various political
parties, what the candidates say and the political atmosphere. Be aware of the
opinion-oriented articles on newspapers since they are more likely to be partisan
opinion. They will bar you from making independent decision on your vote.
Well, you also need first-hand information too. The late
evening news in our media houses is a summary of what went down at political
rallies. It does not break a bone to attend a political rally which is held in
the neighborhood grounds. When there is a political rally and you have time,
sneak in and listen to what the aspirants say. This will be first-hand, not
edited or summarized by a news reporter. You will ingest, digest and make
informative decision thereafter.
The world has advanced into the use of the internet to pass
information and so has the political arena. Political parties have websites and
social media accounts. This can be useful in getting full information about
political parties, what they stand for and their plans. Some of the information
on party website will be vital addition since not all of that is unveiled in
rallies. The internet can also be used to get information on election procedures
and elections rules, the dos and don’ts! This is accessed through the electoral
body website (www.iebc.or.ke).
Finally, as a voter, one must understand what voting means
to them and the nation as a whole. You must know why you are voting. Vote peacefully
and wisely!
